I set out this week on writing my next book, tentatively titled Liberal Authoritarianism in Practice — and I decided to vlog my writer’s journey! Or maybe I should call it a writer’s trip. It’s sure to be one. You can find out more about the book (and find links to all the vlogs) at:
Authors usually only receive reader feedback when it’s too late to make any changes, but by vlogging my way through the book, I hope to get feedback throughout the process. I’m also finding that talking about the book is already changing how I think about writing the book. My vlog about the outline led me to consolidate two of my planned chapters to simplify the structure of the book, and my vlog about the book proposal convinced me of the need to more firmly ground the book in political sociology instead of political theory.
I doubt many people will want to watch the entire vodcast series, but I am genuinely interested to see people’s suggestions for the development of the book, especially as the vlogs move toward covering actual drafts. I promise to read and respond to all of the comments I receive on these videos. I look forward to hearing from you all!
In other news, The Professors Podcast returns today with guest Michael Johnston, Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean (Academic) in the School of Education at Victoria University of Wellington. We’ll be talking about the state of academic freedom in New Zealand, and probably a lot of other things besides. It should be fun! Join us LIVE this Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm Sydney time, or watch the show later at your convenience. The link is below.
